Chapter Twelve

To Martin’s relief the inquest, conducted by Ford, proceeded without a hitch, returning a verdict of murder against a person or persons unknown.

Huntercombe left for Hampstead from the Red Lion on horseback, leaving his stepson in Will Barclay’s care to return to Grosvenor Square.

He drew Martin aside briefly under cover of Harry asking Kit if there was anything in the shop he might purchase for his mother.

‘I’m trusting you to keep her safe, Lacy.’

Martin couldn’t blame the man for his grim expression. ‘In all ways, sir.’ He bit his lip. ‘Harry mentioned that business with Carshalton—he said that you don’t believe—’

‘That you had anything to do with it?’ Huntercombe asked. ‘I don’t. Nor does Emma. Is that why you’ve held back from the children?’

Martin shrugged. ‘There were plenty of whispers. And the last thing I wanted to do was give Carshalton a scapegoat if he tried again. Beyond that—’ He met the Marquess’s gaze squarely. ‘My father and I behaved very badly to Lady Huntercombe. My presence can only distress her.’

Huntercombe raised his brows. ‘Really? I suggest that you permit her to decide what will and won’t distress her. You can practise that very thing while you’re dealing with Kit.’

‘Sir—you have my word. You must know that I will do nothing to take advantage of this situation. I fully understand that marriage between Kit and myself is impossible.’

Huntercombe was silent for a moment, his expression unreadable. Then he held out his hand. ‘Keep her safe for now, Lacy. We’ll discuss the rest later.’

Martin stared after him. What rest could there be?
